NOTE: A child may join the Club as soon as he/she turns 5 years of age.
A Club cannot accept membership of a child until they have reached the age of five years to comply with insurance requirements.
2. CONSIDER YOUR MEMBERSHIP COSTS
To cover many of the operation costs, North Wollongong SLSC requires all nippers and one parent to be financial members.
The current Nipper costs are listed on our North Wollongong SLSC membership form. The number of children joining the Nippers program, will affect your total membership cost.
NOTE: Every Nipper child registration/renewal requires one adult to become an associate member.
3. REGISTER YOUR CHILD
All Nippers must be registered with the Club, and Surf Life Saving Australia prior to participating in any events. This can be done either online or in person at North Wollongong Surf Club.

Registering at the club:
For new Nipper members, sometimes the easiest method may be to attend the Club on one of our two official registration dates. At registration you will meet committee members and age managers, who can answer any questions.
The registration dates for the 2016/2017 season are:
DAY 1 – Sunday 18 September 2016, 10.00 am to 12.00 pm
DAY 2 – Sunday 25 September 2016, 10.00 am to 12.00 pm
This take place on the first floor (entrance from the western steps) at North Wollongong Surf Club.
The official registration dates allow you to:
• Register your child and an associate member with a new membership
• Collect and complete forms, membership, carnival application
• Select and buy Club uniform and swimmers
• Ask questions of our junior committee and perhaps meet your age manager
• Make a payment in person – Cash, EFTPOS
What to bring:
• Child/Children’s Birth Certificate (new members)
• Form of payment – cash/ EFTPOS is accepted
• Bring your children (if possible) to try on some uniform items, it is also a good opportunity to go straight afterwards to the University of Wollongong pool to complete the proficiency side of registration.
4. CHECK YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN CAN SWIM THE NECESSARY PROFICIENCY
At Nippers we do not provide swimming lessons. We suggest that all Nippers participate in one of our local swim schools all year round, in order to prepare your child for surf sport activities. Children who do pool swimming regularly will be more capable in the surf and ultimately enjoy nippers more.
In order to participate in water activities Under 8 to Under 14 Nippers must complete water proficiency assessments, in accordance with Surf Life Saving Australia’s requirements, as soon as possible after registration at the start of the season. Under 6 to Under 7 participate in beach activities only.
We suggest that all parents used the guide on our Proficiencies page to check how your child is swimming in an Olympic sized swimming pool, prior to registration.
Every junior member is required to participate in this evaluation prior to any water-based activities being undertaken.
Note: It is not an assessment which if not completed competently precludes the child from becoming a member or continuing with junior surf education or training activities.
5. ATTEND OUR OFFICIAL PROFICIENCY SESSIONS
The pool swims will be held at the beginning of the season (to be advised but generally University of Wollongong pool). Subsequent swims are held as required at the Continental Pools, North Wollongong Beach. Members who are unsuccessful at their first attempt are encouraged to try again at a later time.
6. PARENTS COMPLETE A MEMBER DECLARATION FORM
As part of the Club’s statutory requirement, the Club is required to collate a signed Member Protection Declaration from each adult accompanying a Nipper.
Parents of Junior Activity Members who join as Associate members are required to complete the Declaration.
These forms are available on registration.
At North Wollongong Surf Life Saving Club, we understand that due to travel, holidays and our hectic lives you may not be able to attend our two official registration dates. You and your family may have also made the decision to join nippers once our season has already started.
Don’t worry and don’t panic!!!!
We accept late registrations after the registration dates, and throughout the Nipper season.
Simply, begin the process from the beginning, and contact our office staff to make payment. Attend the next nipper Sunday early, before 8.45 am and introduce yourself, to one of our friendly committee members or age managers, who will assist you. We will provide you with an opportunity to complete the necessary proficiency swim at the Continental Pool after Nippers on Sunday. Don’t forget a birth certificate.
